I don’t think Nigeria will ever have any wonderful moment as day of independence

Described as the Socrates of the Supreme Court, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa remains one of the living consciences of the nation. At 82 years, the former Supreme Court Judge is still mentally agile and productive. He did not only watch events as they happen in the country, in the last 50 years, he was also a participant. He talks about Nigeria as it achieves the golden age. His reflections are as instructive as they are sobering.

Excerpts:

Let’s go back in time. Capture the euphoria that greeted our independence.
It was wonderful, everybody was happy. Those who had no money had to borrow money to buy new clothes. Everybody came in new apparel and you could see the joy, the smiles, not pretended smiles, genuine smiles coming from their hearts. And you had parties made in every nook and cranny of the country. Some old…who didn’t know anything about governance were involved, everybody. I don’t think Nigeria will ever have any moment like the day of independence of 1960. It was a wonderful moment.
