Abuja bombing: Okah to remain in Johannesburg prison custody

A magistrate’s court in Johannesburg on Tuesday ordered the continued remand of Henry Okah, leader of the militant MEND group, in prison pending his reappearance on October 14. Okah, who leads the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) from his South Africa base, is facing a two-count charge in connection with the October 1 twin explosions in Abuja, which left 12 persons dead and many others injured.

The Southern Africa correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused had on Monday requested that he be transferred to the High Risk Detention Centre in Johannesburg where, he said, he would be more secure. However, authorities at the centre rejected the request, leading the magistrate to adjourn the case to Tuesday to resolve the issue.
